Summary
Learn what a pre-assessment is, when it appears, and how to complete one before starting a course in the KnowledgeCity Learning Portal.
Introduction
A pre-assessment is a short quiz that may appear before you begin a course. Its purpose is to measure your existing knowledge on the course subject so that — after you complete the course and take the certification test — your organization can see how much you have learned.
Pre-assessments are always informational. You cannot fail a pre-assessment, and it will never prevent you from accessing a course.
Requirements
Before you begin, make sure you have:
✅ An active user account on the KnowledgeCity Learning Portal
✅ An active license that covers the course you are opening
✅ A pre-assessment enabled on that course by your administrator (not all courses have one)
Steps to Follow
Starting the Pre-Assessment
When you open a course for the first time and a pre-assessment is enabled, you will be automatically taken to the Pre-Assessment intro page instead of the course page.
The intro page displays:
The course name
The number of questions in the assessment
The minimum score (if set by your administrator)
A Start Pre-Assessment & cancel button
Click Start Pre-Assessment to begin. To go back without starting, click Cancel.
Note: If you have already completed the pre-assessment for this course, you will go directly to the course on all future visits. The pre-assessment will not appear again.
Answering Questions
Once you start, you will see one question at a time:
Read the question carefully.
Select your answer.
Use the Next and Previous buttons to move between questions.
A progress indicator at the top shows how many questions remain.
Submitting Your Answers
When you have answered all questions, click Submit to send your answers. A confirmation will appear.
Viewing Your Results
After submission, the Pre-Assessment Complete screen appears, confirming that your answers have been recorded.
Depending on your organization's settings:
If score display is enabled, your percentage score will appear on this screen.
If score display is not enabled, you will see a confirmation message only.
Regardless of your score, you will not be blocked from accessing the course.
Returning to the Course
Click Back to Course on the completion screen to return to the course page and begin learning.
Expected Result
After completing these steps, you will be able to:
Understand when and why a pre-assessment appears before a course
Complete the pre-assessment quiz and submit your answers
Return to the course and continue your training without any interruption
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to pass the pre-assessment to access the course?
No. The pre-assessment records your score for your organization's reporting purposes, but you are always granted access to the course regardless of your result.
Will I see the pre-assessment every time I open the course?
No. Once you complete the pre-assessment, you will go directly to the course on all future visits. It only appears once, before your first attempt.
What if I don't see a pre-assessment?
Not all courses have pre-assessments enabled. If a course does not have one configured by your administrator, you will go straight to the course page as normal.
What if I close the browser or lose connection before finishing?
Your in-progress answers are not saved. The next time you open the course, you may be prompted to start the pre-assessment again depending on whether your attempt was recorded.
I have a license but the course is showing an access notification instead of the pre-assessment.
Your license may not cover this specific course, or there may be additional access requirements such as a learning path prerequisite. Contact your administrator for assistance.
My score was not shown after I finished.
Score display is a setting controlled by your administrator. If scores are not shown for your organization, this is intentional.

Score is not displayed on the completion screen | Score display is disabled by your organization | This is an intentional setting — contact your administrator for your score if needed |
