Account General Settings: How to Configure Start Pages Time Zones and Access schedule

Summary

A step-by-step guide to configuring the General Settings tab in KnowledgeCity LMS, including start page selection, time zone configuration, user management options, date formats, and access schedules.

Introduction

The General Settings tab is the first of five configuration sections within Account Settings. This is where you establish the foundational user experience and system-wide regional preferences for your KnowledgeCity LMS. Proper configuration here ensures users land on the correct page after login, dates display in your organization's preferred format, and platform access is restricted to appropriate hours.

Steps to Follow

Accessing the General Settings Tab

This guide covers the core configuration options available under General Settings. Once you have familiarized yourself with the Account Settings section (as covered in: Understanding and Navigating Your Account Settings in KnowledgeCity LMS), you can now proceed with configuring your general preferences.

Follow the steps below to access the General Settings tab:

  1. Log in to your KnowledgeCity LMS as a Super Admin.

  2. Locate the Settings dropdown menu on the top panel of the LMS interface and select Account Settings.

  3. Click on the General Settings tab to access the configuration options.

The General Settings page is organized into five key sections: General for learning portal start page selection, Account time zone for portal-wide time zone configuration, Users management for username prefix and Employee ID uniqueness controls, Date Settings for system-wide date format selection, and Access schedule for creating time-based platform access rules.

Configuring the Start Page for Users

The Start Page determines where users land immediately after signing in to the Learning Portal. Under the General section, click the Start page for users after they sign in dropdown menu and select one of the following options:

  • Home page: Users land on the homepage of the learning portal.

  • My learning: Users land on their personal learning page showing assignments and other details.

  • Assignments: Users land directly on their assignments view.

  • Current page: Users are taken back to the same learning portal page they were on, instead of a fixed default start page.

  • Custom URL: Enter a specific URL where users will be redirected after login.

Configuring Account Time Zone

The Account Time Zone sets the default time zone for your entire account.

  • Select Account Time Zone: Under the Account time zone section. Click the dropdown menu to search and select your desired time zone from the list.

Configuring User Management

User management settings determine how user accounts are generated and identified within your LMS. These controls ensure consistent naming conventions and data integrity across your organization.

  • Set New Username Prefix: Enter the desired prefix in the New username prefix field. This prefix is automatically added to every new username generated by the system, creating a standardized naming convention that helps identify users by group or department.

  • Configure Employee ID Uniqueness: Toggle the Employee ID unique switch ON to require unique Employee IDs for every user, or toggle OFF if duplicates are permitted. This ensures accurate reporting, smooth data synchronization, and prevents identity confusion.

Configuring Date Settings

The Date Format setting determines how dates appear throughout the entire system, including reports, user profiles, and course completion records. Under the Date Settings section, choose one of the following format options:

  • YYYY/MM/DD (Default)

  • DD.MM.YYYY (European standard)

  • MM/DD/YYYY (U.S. standard)

  • YYYY-MM-DD (Asian standard)

Managing Access Schedules

Access schedules allow you to control when users can access the learning portal. This is essential for time-bound training programs, compliance windows, or maintaining work-life boundaries by restricting after-hours access.

Under the Access schedule section, the time zone dropdown displays the default time zone applied to all schedules. Changing the time zone from the dropdown automatically converts all existing schedule times to the newly selected zone without altering the actual schedule rules. This helps you verify schedules for users in different geographic locations without needing to recreate rules.

The following controls are available to manage your access schedules:

  • Add schedule: Click to create a new access rule. In the popup window, configure the following:

    • Start week day: Select the day when access begins (e.g., Monday)

    • Start time: Set the time when access opens on the start day

    • End week day: Select the day when access ends (e.g., Friday)

    • End time: Set the time when access closes on the end day

    • Click Save changes to apply the schedule or Cancel to close the popup

  • Schedule List: Once added, schedules appear in a table with the following columns:

    • Start week day: Day when access opens

    • Start time: Time when access opens

    • End week day: Day when access closes

    • End time: Time when access closes

    • Action menu: Delete/ Remove the schedule

Save Your Changes

After configuring your desired settings, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save to apply all changes. Changes will not take effect until the Save button is clicked.

Conclusion

You have successfully configured the General Settings for your KnowledgeCity LMS. The start page, time zone, user management preferences, date format, and access schedules are now set according to your organization's requirements. These foundational settings ensure a consistent and localized experience for all users accessing the platform.
